Dominican Republic

The economic and social well-being of the population of the Dominican Republic is intrinsically linked to the climate and the natural environment. The country’s geographical location and topographical diversity expose its inhabitants and ecosystems to the risk of disaster due to multiple events, such as hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, drought, forest fires, severe storms, coastal floods, landslides and river floods. The current national early warning system still lacks the level of detail and differentiation necessary for the population to act promptly to protect themselves.

Spotlight

Building resilience through better early warning and climate services

In the Dominican Republic, where hurricanes, floods and droughts increasingly threaten communities, effective warnings are essential to save lives and livelihoods. The project will enhance governance and institutional collaboration, strengthen risk knowledge, and improve early warning and climate services to better meet end-user needs. By building resilience and safeguarding development gains, the initiative will help vulnerable communities and climate-sensitive sectors better prepare for and respond to hazards. The project is designed to create synergies with existing efforts to strengthen the country’s hydrometeorological services and is strategically aligned with a major government program supported by the World Bank.
