Enhancing MHEWS in response to climate change
Multi-hazard early warning systems (MHEWS) that provide timely, actionable information are thus critical to protecting lives, assets, and livelihoods in the Caribbean. Climate change is expected to further exacerbate hazard levels while unplanned urban expansion and inadequate construction practices are continuously increasing vulnerability. Effective anticipatory actions, prevention and disaster management, and community resilience-building efforts as part of climate change adaptation strategies, are crucial in reducing the risks and protecting the well-being of both people and ecosystems in the Caribbean. In addition to this, for EWS to be effective, they need to incorporate the full range of hazards: they need to be MHEWS.
