Pacific SIDS

Of the 4.3 billion population of Asia Pacific, it is the 2.3 million people of the Pacific’s Small Island Developing States who face the highest level of disaster and climate risk. The disastrous impact of climate change is already pushing tens of thousands of Pacific Islanders into poverty every year.

Key goals  

  • Support the development of bills and legislations for meteorology, hydrology, and disaster management.  
  • Improved quality of accessible services provided to key sectors and stakeholders to better respond to hazards. 
  • Enhanced communication and awareness programmes on early warnings. 
  • Stronger inclusion of gender and minority groups in early warning systems. 

Key Results  

  • Successfully delivered a regional assessment of public and private capacities, gaps and needs with respect to MHEWS governance, product generation and service delivery. 
  • Provided support to the delivery and development of 6 national strategic plans for Meteorological and Hydrological Services. 
  • Development of multiple capacity building, knowledge, and communication products and services through regional and national workshops. 
  • Improved information technology-related products and training to Pacific SIDS NMHSs : 4 websites and the development of an e-learning platform to provide IT-related training to NMHSs in the region.   
  • Procurement and delivery of High-Performance Computers for the implementation of Numerical Weather Prediction models which serves NMHSs in the region with their data and forecasting. 
  • 35 women, working in meteorology, hydrology, and climatology from 13 Pacific Island States were trained in leadership.
