Enhancing and expanding hydro-meteorological services in response to recurrent floods and droughts
After severe flooding in 2010, Benin received support for its early warning systems through the World Bank Emergency Urban Environment Project in conjunction with support from the UNDP through the Benin EWS project (“SAP Benin”). Since the projects closed, there have been some localized initiatives supporting the community EWS, but more recurrent flood and drought events have hit the country. This situation prompted the Government to consider modernizing Benin hydromet and climate service system and to continue the efforts to build resilience to disaster and climate-related risks by strengthening their capacity, tailoring with the actual needs.
