From December 9–13, 2024, Kampala, Uganda became a hub of regional collaboration as experts from disaster management, meteorology, and hydrology across the Horn of Africa gathered to address the pressing challenges of droughts and floods.
Co-rganized by UNDRR in partnership with IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) and supported by the CREWS Greater Horn of Africa project, this workshop focused on building early warning systems and strengthening transboundary risk management.
“Transboundary Risks required that partners break the walls and barriers by working together across the board and on aspects of transboundary cooperation and collaboration,” emphasized Benjamin Ssekamuli, a hydrologist from Uganda.
This gathering underscores a critical message: regional resilience demands collective action. By prioritizing data-sharing protocols and forging stronger bonds between nations, the Horn of Africa is taking essential steps toward mitigating climate risks and protecting millions of lives.
