Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde faces heightened exposure to the impacts of climate change, such as coastal erosion, sea level rise, floods, drought, storm surges, and many more. These hazards threaten the country’s sustainable development and the wellbeing of the population. In recognition of this, the Government of Cabo Verde has identified the need to strengthen its multi hazard early warning system (MHEWS).

Key objectives

  • Facilitate the development and validation of the national EW4All Roadmap.
  • Support the development of the next iteration of the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia e Geofisica (INMG) Strategic Plan.
  • Use the EW4All Roadmap as a platform to enable investments and alignment of efforts across the MHEWS value chain.
  • Enhance INMG’s website to strengthen visibility, access to information, and service delivery.
  • Support digital transformation initiatives, contributing to enhanced data collection, management, and sharing.
  • Enable improved dissemination of forecasts and warnings, including through the adoption and use of the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP).

Key results

The ASW action note was approved by the Steering Committee on 18 May 2026.

Strengthening Cabo Verde’s resilience through national multi-hazard early warning systems

The Government of Cabo Verde has recognized that building national multi-hazard early warning system (MHEWS) is a core element of its broader climate governance transformation and efforts to build climate resilience. The country’s heightened exposure to climate hazards threatens sustainable development and the wellbeing of its people. The World Meteorological Organization will provide technical support to develop the national Early Warning for All Roadmap, in collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia e Geofisica (INMG), ensuring alignment with the national priorities.
