Sierra Leone 2.0

Sierra Leone faces escalating climate risks, with frequent floods, landslides, and storms intensified by rapid urbanization and environmental degradation. The first CREWS ASW action for Sierra Leone has established critical foundations, improving policies, coordination, and forecasting capacities. However, gaps remain in the observation networks, real-time data integration, forecasting accuracy, and last-mile dissemination.

Funding: USD 250,000
Duration: Mar 2026–Feb 2026
Status: Ongoing

Key goals

  • Increase accuracy, timeliness, and accessibility of weather and flood warnings.
  • Improve coordinated decision-making among agencies responsible for risk monitoring, disaster response, and water management.
  • Ensure communities, especially those in most vulnerable urban and peri-urban settlements, receive actionable information to guide early action.
  • Sustain institutional performance through improve technical capacity, reduced training gaps, and stronger operational systems.

Key results

The ASW action note was approved by the Steering Committee on 19 March 2026.

Spotlight

From pilot actions to stronger national systems

This project builds on the foundations laid by the earlier CREWS ASW “Jump-Start” action in Sierra Leone, which improved policies, coordination and forecasting capacities, mapped early warning dissemination pathways in Freetown, piloted a rainfall-based flood forecasting model, and supported the creation of a multi-agency Flood Task Force. The new action aims to take those early gains further by scaling up and institutionalising systems, strengthening last-mile warning dissemination, improving flood forecasting accuracy, and reinforcing coordination across key agencies so that earlier pilot efforts can translate into more reliable and sustainable early warning services nationwide.
