Strengthening early warning and early action systems for meteorological, hydrological and climate extremes in Southeast Asia

SHARE

We are pleased to share that the CREWS Steering Committee has officially approved Phase 2 of the CREWS Southeast Asia Programme, marking a renewed commitment to building climate resilience and disaster preparedness in Cambodia and Lao PDR.

Building on the achievements of CREWS Southeast Asia phase 1, which improved hydro-meteorological monitoring, forecasting capabilities, and community preparedness. Phase 2 is a four-year programme that will deepen this impact by enhancing service delivery, accessibility, and institutional resilience in both countries.

The programme will also continue to leverage key regional partnerships—including with the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), People in Need (PIN), the SOFF initiative and other partners—to ensure alignment with broader regional goals and maximize the long-term sustainability of its outcomes.

With more frequent and severe floods, droughts, and storms due to climate change, early warning systems are a necessity. CREWS Southeast Asia Phase 2 is a vital step toward ensuring that vulnerable communities in Cambodia and Lao PDR are better informed, better protected, and better prepared.

Implemented by World Meteorological Organization in partnership with the The World Bank and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and with strong leadership of and collaboration with national agencies, this next phase will continue to drive the #EarlyWarningsforAll initiative and scale up inclusive, risk-informed, people-centered early warning systems.
